At the bottom of the trunk was a worn file.
The documents they contained revealed that sixty-five years earlier, Harold had discreetly taken in a young woman and her newborn daughter after the child’s father disappeared. He had paid their rent, covered their school fees, and provided them with monthly child support for years.

Every letter that the woman had written to him had been carefully preserved.

For a moment, a terrible thought invaded my mind.

Harold had another family.

I sat on the cold garage floor and put my hand over my mouth.

“Oh Harold,” I whispered.

I heard the sound of gravel outside.

The young girl who attended the funeral was standing on the threshold, a bicycle in her hand.

“I thought you would come here,” she said.

“Did you follow me?”

She nodded without hesitation.

“When Harold handed me the envelope, he told me it was the most important thing I would ever do.”

I observed her closely.

“What is your name?”

“Gini.”

“And your mother?”

“Virginia.”

The name echoed in my chest.

“Can you take me to her?”

Gini hesitated before explaining that her mother was hospitalized and needed heart surgery that they couldn’t afford.
We went there together.

Virginia was lying pale on a hospital bed, with tubes in her arm.

“Harold would sometimes come to visit us,” said Gini in a soft voice.

The doctor later told me that the operation was urgent but expensive.

Standing in that corridor, I realized that Harold knew exactly what I was going to discover.

Two days later, I returned with the money for the operation.

It worked.

When Virginia was strong enough to speak, she told me that Harold had saved her life, as well as her mother’s.

Later, she showed me an old photo album.

One page featured a photograph of young Harold standing next to a teenage girl holding a baby.

As soon as I saw her, I was breathless.

I knew that girl.

It was my sister Iris, the one who left home when I was fifteen and never came back.

That baby in her arms was Virginia.

When I got home, I opened Harold’s old journal and read the entries dating back sixty-five years earlier.

He had found my sister abandoned with her newborn baby.

It was only later that he understood who she was.

He helped her discreetly for years, knowing that revealing her situation would reopen old wounds in my family.

So he kept the secret.

Don’t betray me.

But to protect everyone.

I closed the newspaper and hugged it tightly to me.

Harold had carried this burden alone for sixty-five years.
The next day, I visited Virginia and Gini.

I told them the truth.

“You are my sister’s daughter,” I told Virginia.

“And you,” I said to Gini, “you’re my great-niece.”

Gini crossed the room and hugged me tightly.

At that moment, I finally understood.

Harold had not hidden another life.
