Without seeing the original environment where they were discovered, identifying the exact purpose with absolute certainty is difficult.
The Best Way to Identify Them
The first thing to check is the weight of each object.
If possible, place one on a household scale and record the measurement. Antique mechanical weights were often produced in standardized sizes because the amount of weight mattered to the mechanism.
Next, measure the length and diameter.
Then inspect the surface carefully.
Look for:
– Numbers
– Letters
– Maker’s marks
– Stamped symbols
– Engraved initials
– Paint layers
– Rust patterns
– Threads or attachment points
– Evidence of a chain or cord
– Matching pairs or sets
The fact that several similar pieces were found together is also extremely important.
If there are dozens of identical pieces, they were probably not random decorations. They were likely part of a system, household supply, or collection of replacement components.
If they came from the same room, that could provide another major clue.
For example, finding them near an old grandfather clock would make the clock-weight theory much stronger. Finding them near old curtains or window hardware would point in another direction.
