The paper inside was crisp, heavy, and covered in legal text, but it was the hand-written letter resting on top that made my heart hammer against my ribs.
I pulled the single sheet of notepad paper free from the clear plastic wrapper. The handwriting was sharp, slanted, and instantly recognizable as Walter’s. It began without a formal greeting, just a direct explanation from a man who had chosen his moments with painful precision.
“Olivia,” the letter read. “If you are reading this, it means you walked out of that gate without fighting back. You showed the same quiet dignity you have displayed every single day since you entered this house. My wife and my son believe they have stripped you of everything. They believe that because your name was never added to the deed of the house on Elm Street, you leave San Antonio with empty hands. They are mistaken.”
