The relic consists of two volumes, each approximately 400 pages long and 25 cm thick, written on goatskin. The cover of the first volume, Garima 1, is copper, while that of the second, Garima 2, is silver. Despite Muslim and Italian invasions, as well as a fire in the 1930s that destroyed the monastery church, these Gospels miraculously survived, preserved by the altitude and dry conditions of the monastery.
Conservation and restoration
The discovery and preservation of these manuscripts were made possible thanks to the Ethiopian Heritage Fund. This organization not only safeguarded the texts but also enabled experts to work directly on site. Working conditions were particularly difficult, but the experts managed to restore the binding and clean some of the pages.
